Being thankful should be a Christian virtue.
Thanking others for their service is a small act of kindness and appreciation.
I learnt of the novel Project:Gratitude of a Student Christian group in Singapore. The focus was pro-actively expressing thanks (through a variety of means, not just verbal) to the university service staff. This is particularly important and powerful because such staff are usually considered "invisible" or "second class citizens" at most universities.

You can read more about the Project on the IFES website: http://ifesworld.org/article/2012/02/thanking-the-unsung-campus-heroes. Also, another Singapore university held a small event where people wrote and balloons a message to someone to whom they were thankful. That will be the main story on the IFES website on 14 March. I think the idea of focussing especially on the 'invisible' people is great - much harder than thanking people we know!
